Fit the bed to the usable crate floor

The crate's advertised length describes its outside, while the bed rests inside a tray or between bottom rails. Measure the clear length and width with the tray in place. Include any corner shape, raised lip or divider that steals floor area. A bed that curls up the sides is harder to keep dry and can interfere with a door or bowl.

Measure height twice: from the bare tray and from the top of the proposed bed. PDSA says the dog should be able to stand and sit without touching the roof, turn around and stretch out. A 10cm mattress changes that usable height noticeably in a modest crate. Use our dog crate measuring guide before choosing by an inch label.

How the beds differ in daily use

Ellie-Bo striped: a padded matched-size option

The selected Ellie-Bo bed is about 87 × 57 × 10cm and is sold for the brand's 36-inch crate. The cover can be removed; the seller gives separate 30°C wash directions for cover and liner. This is a comfortable starting point when the crate and bed come from the same family, although you still need to compare the real floor and remaining height.

KSIIA plush: wash the whole pad

The KSIIA large pad is listed at 90 × 60 × 8cm. Its whole-bed wash avoids removing and replacing a cover, but the full filling must dry thoroughly before returning to the crate. That matters if the bed is needed every night: a spare flat mat can keep the resting area comfortable during drying.

JOEJOY foam: a removable cover

The selected JOEJOY mattress is 89 × 56 × 8cm with a zipped cover. A removable shell is useful for routine dirt, while the foam core should be cared for separately according to its label. The cover's water barrier should not be assumed to make the seams or entire bed leak-proof.

Maximum Pet Products: sealed and wipe-clean

The small 60 × 45 × 5cm version has a coated outer and no exposed zip. That suits a small crate where spills need wiping quickly. It is not a washable plush mattress, and its tougher fabric is not a licence to leave a persistent chewer with damaged bedding.

Choose the right cleaning route

For occasional muddy paws, a removable washable cover is usually simple. For frequent accidents, distinguish a water-resistant surface from a sealed waterproof construction and look for trapped moisture under the bed. A whole-bed wash works only if the filling can dry completely; a cover-only wash leaves the core needing inspection.

Our washable crate bed guide compares those routes in detail, while the waterproof crate mat guide explains where liquid can still enter. Keep the tray clean and dry beneath any bedding.

Check the dog, not just the product

Use the bedding and bowl allowance diagrams to separate loaded-bed headroom from uncovered floor. A mattress footprint is not the same as its flat sleeping centre, and advertised depth need not be its thickness under the dog.

Let the dog investigate the bed with the crate door open. Some prefer a cooler, firmer surface; others choose more cushioning. If the dog drags, shreds or swallows fabric, remove the damaged bed and reassess the setup. If restlessness or escape attempts are new, consider discomfort, heat, toileting needs and distress rather than buying a thicker mattress as the first response.

Keep water available, protect airflow and leave enough room to turn and lie naturally. Bedding helps a well-planned crate; it cannot correct an undersized one. For the whole setup, see where to put a dog crate and how long a dog can stay in a crate.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best bed for a dog crate?

A bed that lies flat on the usable crate floor, gives comfortable support, leaves access to water and is practical to clean. Fit and the dog's preference matter more than a universal top pick.

Should a crate bed fill the entire floor?

It should cover most of the resting area without bunching, fouling the door or leaving no stable space for water. A slightly smaller flat pad can work better than a nominally exact fit with raised sides.

Is a thick orthopaedic bed better in a crate?

Not automatically. Extra depth may help a dog who needs cushioning but also reduces sitting and standing height. For a dog with pain or mobility problems, ask your vet about suitable support.

Can a puppy have a bed in a crate?

Yes, provided the puppy does not chew or swallow the material and the bed can be cleaned after accidents. Inspect it frequently and choose a simpler washable surface if the puppy damages the filling.

How do I measure for a crate bed?

Measure the clear internal floor between frame rails and the height from the tray to the roof. Compare both with the bed's actual dimensions and thickness, then check the door still opens freely.
