Dog car crate buying guide

Best dog crates for car travel

Compare dog car crates by boot fit, dimensions, access, ventilation, installation and the quality of any crash-test evidence.

Our recommendations

Dog car crates worth comparing

These products solve different budgets and boot shapes. A rigid appearance is not proof of crash performance, so the comparison states the evidence boundary explicitly.

A car crate has to pass three fit tests

First, the dog must fit. Second, the crate must pass through the boot opening and sit within the available floor and roof shape. Third, the vehicle must provide the attachment points and clearances required by the manufacturer. Failing any one makes the setup unsuitable.

Begin with the dog's natural length, sitting height, width and resting posture. Then follow our car-boot measurement guide before comparing the products below. A divided car crate needs usable room and an access route for each dog, not just a wide enough boot.

What we prioritised

Clear installation instructions

A car crate should state how it is restrained. Cargo loops, supplied tension straps, seatbelt routing and brackets are not interchangeable. Do not create an improvised route through ventilation bars or around a door.

Access after an incident

A tailgate can become blocked. A rear escape hatch or alternative door can provide another way to reach the dog, provided the vehicle layout leaves that exit usable.

Ventilation and visibility

Air must circulate with the boot closed and luggage loaded. Check that the crate does not sit against solid seat backs or bags that cover its main vents. Dark tinted glass and a large dog can raise the interior temperature quickly even when the outside air feels mild.

Evidence that matches the claim

“Heavy duty”, “safe” and “aluminium” do not describe a crash test. Strong evidence identifies the exact model, configuration, procedure, result and certification where claimed. Our published crash-evidence matrix keeps historical reports, manufacturer references and certifier entries separate instead of ranking incompatible methods.

The dog car crates in detail

Thule Allax S: strongest documented safety case

Thule says the Allax range is tested from the front and rear and in a simulated roll-over, and identifies TÜV SÜD certification using ECE R17 and R129 methods. The design includes adjustable depth, a 10–13cm crumple-zone allowance, tension-band installation, locking gas-damped door and a rear escape hatch.

The small variant still needs checking in Thule's vehicle fit tool. Plan its complete adjustable profile and follow the specified installation; the built-in crumple-zone provision is not a universal extra rear gap to add to every crate.

Ferplast Atlas Car 80 Scenic: easiest clean-up

Ferplast publishes 82 × 51 × 61cm and a 20kg maximum for the Atlas Car 80 Scenic. The thermoplastic shell, two-way sliding door and removable draining mat make it practical where muddy journeys and limited door-swing space matter.

The manufacturer describes it as a car carrier but does not present crash-test documentation on the official page we checked. Treat it as a vehicle-shaped containment option, not as equivalent evidence to the Allax.

CADOCA medium: compact sloped aluminium format

The CADOCA publishes 70 × 54 × 51cm, with a trapezoidal profile and lockable door. Its shorter published width can help in a compact boot, but the sloping panels mean internal head and floor dimensions matter.

No exact-model crash-test report is supplied on the Amazon listing. Check assembly fasteners regularly and secure the crate using only a method the manufacturer approves.

Cozy Pet ACDC12: wide two-door layout

At roughly 89–90 × 69 × 60cm, the ACDC12 is the largest option here. Its product title and bullet disagree by 1cm on width, so confirm the assembled size if the boot clearance is tight. It has an angled back, double doors, locks and a removable divider. The divider can organise space but does not automatically make it appropriate for two dogs; each dog needs suitable room and compatibility.

The listing does not provide crash-test documentation. The flat-pack structure also makes assembly and fastener checks part of routine safety.

Install before introducing the dog

Assemble the crate exactly as instructed, place it in the empty boot and close the tailgate slowly while observing every point of contact. Check the rear window, wiper motor cover, seatbacks, parcel-shelf fittings and door swing.

Attach it to the specified cargo points. Push from several directions: normal hand pressure should not make it slide, tip or strike trim. Then add a thin non-slip pad that does not obstruct drainage, ventilation or door hardware.

Teach the dog to use it while parked

With the car off in a cool, safe place, reward the dog for approaching and entering through an open, secured door. Build from seconds to calm rests before closing the crate, then practise with the tailgate shut and finally with very short drives.

Stop if the dog pants in cool conditions, claws, bites the bars, throws their body around or refuses food they normally take. Motion sickness, fear and confinement distress need separate assessment; a stronger crate is not a behaviour treatment.

Before every drive

Check the crate attachment, door lock, emergency exit, ventilation and the boot load. No loose luggage should be able to strike the crate. Carry the correct tool or key for emergency opening where the product requires one, and keep the route clear from the passenger compartment.

Read Highway Code Rule 57 and plan breaks before setting off. If you are weighing a dog guard against a crate, account for loose luggage and the installation method as well as the animal's position. Keep vents exposed and review temperature around the car crate before warm-weather journeys.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest dog crate for a car?

Look for a purpose-built model that fits the dog and vehicle, has a documented installation method and provides credible exact-model test evidence. A crate cannot protect as intended if it is the wrong size or not secured correctly.

Can I use a home wire crate in the car?

Do not assume a household folding crate is a vehicle safety product. It may not have suitable anchors or crash evidence and can deform or move. Use a car-specific solution installed according to its instructions.

Should a dog car crate be tight in the boot?

It should not rock or obstruct the tailgate, but wedging it tightly is not a substitute for the manufacturer's attachment system. Allow any required crumple zone and follow clearance instructions.

How big should a car crate be?

The dog needs enough usable space to stand or sit as the manufacturer specifies, turn and lie naturally, while excessive empty space can increase movement. Follow the exact product's dog-sizing method and never reduce space merely to make it fit the car.

Is an aluminium dog crate automatically crash tested?

No. Aluminium describes a material, not a test result. Ask for the exact model, test method, tested load, result and required vehicle installation.
