Our recommendations
Protection levels worth distinguishing
These examples deliberately show three different constructions. Match the selected size to the crate and do not assume a product title describes every layer of the bed.
Maximum Pet Products sealed waterproof crate bed
Best for: A small crate needing a sealed, wipe-clean bedding surface
A 60 × 45 × 5cm padded bed with a coated, sealed outer cover and no zip or hook-and-loop closure. Liquids are intended to stay outside the filling.
What stands out
- Sealed outer cover
- Quick wipe-down
- No exposed zip
Keep in mind
- Small 60 × 45cm size
- Not machine washable
- No fabric bed is chew-proof
- 60 × 45 × 5cm
- Coated polyester
- Wipe or hose clean
JOEJOY crate mattress with removable cover
Best for: An 89 × 56cm foam mattress with a cover that can be removed for washing
A low-profile, 8cm foam mattress with a zipped washable cover and a non-slip underside. The selected size is 89 × 56cm.
What stands out
- Removable cover
- Published 89 × 56cm footprint
- Low-profile rectangular shape
Keep in mind
- Foam core needs separate care
- Waterproof claim applies to cover, not every seam
- 8cm depth reduces headroom
- 89 × 56 × 8cm
- Zipped cover
- Foam core
The Dog’s Bed water-resistant utility bed
Best for: A practical removable-cover bed where splash resistance matters

Keep in mind
- Water-resistant is not leak-proof
- Dimensions need confirming at checkout
- Not a sealed bed

Start with the type of moisture
Muddy paws and a tipped water bowl call for a surface that wipes or washes easily. Repeated urine accidents demand more: liquid can pass through a zip, under a mat and into the tray or floor below. If accidents are sudden, frequent or accompanied by discomfort, discuss them with a vet rather than treating bedding as the only problem.
There is also a comfort trade-off. A fully coated surface is easy to wipe but may feel firmer or warmer than a textile mat. Keep the crate large enough for a comfortable bed, water and natural movement, as PDSA advises.
Three constructions to compare
Maximum Pet Products: sealed exterior
The selected small bed is 60 × 45 × 5cm. Its coated outer is sealed without a zip or hook-and-loop closure, making it the clearest barrier in this shortlist. Wipe or hose the cover according to the seller's care advice and check for cuts, worn coating or exposed filling. It is only suitable where that small footprint gives the dog enough resting space.
JOEJOY: washable outer, separate foam
The 89 × 56 × 8cm JOEJOY has a removable cover that the seller describes as waterproof. The zip makes laundering easier but is also a potential entry point. After a substantial spill, remove the cover and inspect the foam rather than assuming the outer protected it completely.
The Dog’s Bed: splash resistance
The Dog’s Bed listing uses “waterproof” in its title but describes water-resistant coated fabric in the details. That may be sufficient for damp paws and minor splashes. It is a weaker choice when a complete urine barrier is the priority. Confirm the selected medium dimensions before buying; a water-resistant bed that folds up the crate wall is no practical fit.
Protect the tray and the room floor
After any accident, remove the entire mat and clean the tray, joints and floor beneath. A waterproof top does not stop liquid running around its edge. Check the base of the crate for trapped moisture, especially on timber and laminate, and allow all layers to dry before reassembly.
If a tray is cracked or its lip is damaged, replace it with an exact-fit part. Our replacement crate tray guide explains the measurements that matter. A loose liner can bunch, catch the door or become chewable, so avoid layering several improvised sheets.
Keep the crate a comfortable place
Do not make the surface so slick that the dog hesitates to step in or slides when turning. Watch whether the dog chooses the bed with the door open. For a bed that can go through the washing machine, see washable crate beds; for the everyday fit decision, compare dog crate mats.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Are waterproof crate mats completely leak-proof?
Only a continuous sealed barrier can reliably keep liquid away from the filling. Zips, seams, punctures and worn coating can still leak, so inspect and clean beneath any mat after an accident.
Is water-resistant the same as waterproof?
No. A water-resistant surface may slow a splash, while waterproof construction aims to block liquid. Product titles often blur the terms; read the material and seam details.
Can I put a puppy pad under a crate mat?
A pad may catch an occasional accident if it lies flat and cannot be shredded, but it should not hide dampness or replace a toilet plan. Check and change it promptly.
What if my dog chews the waterproof cover?
Remove damaged bedding immediately. Coated fabric, exposed foam and torn seams can be swallowed; the underlying chewing or distress needs attention before another bed is placed inside.
How do I dry foam after an accident?
Follow the manufacturer's care label. Blot, clean with a pet-appropriate product as directed and allow complete drying before reuse; a damp core should not be returned to the crate.
