Find the model before measuring

Look for a label, receipt or order record with the crate's exact model. Photograph the latch and the channel that holds the tray. MidWest notes that some Life Stages designs changed, so a pan from the same brand and nominal length can still be incompatible. The goal is a tray that slides normally, stays under the floor and is retained by the intended stop.

If the old pan is available, measure its outside dimensions rather than the exposed floor area. Include the raised lip. Measure the clear front opening as well; a tray may appear to fit once inside but be impossible to slide through the frame. If the old tray is missing, use the crate model's official replacement part list first.

Compare documented tray dimensions, not crate labels

These selected listings all use a 36-inch crate label, but their published pan dimensions differ. The table preserves the original units and converts inches using 1 inch = 2.54cm. Normalised figures are rounded to two decimal places for comparison; those decimals do not imply that the products were specified or made to that precision.

The Ellie-Bo tray's listed 60cm width is 4.12cm wider than the MidWest plastic pan's converted 55.88cm. The two MidWest widths differ by just 0.3556cm, about 3.6mm, but closeness is not proof of interchangeability: rim profile, latch generation and retention can still differ. There is no generic fit tolerance to subtract or add.

Outside pan, inner platform and exit path

An outside length and width include the rim. They do not establish the flat inner bed platform, corner radius or taper. Likewise, listed overall height is not plastic or metal thickness. A pan can fit beneath the floor yet be too wide or tall to pass through the frame's exit opening.

Separate overall pan dimensions from the inner bedding platform Schematic top view labels outside length and outside width around the complete tray rim. A dashed inner rectangle marks the flat platform that needs a separate measurement. A side-view inset labels overall rim height, not material thickness. Rail and exit clearance need separate checks. Outside length Outside width Inner flat platformmeasure separately Side view · overall rim height Not rim thickness or rail clearance
Three outside dimensions, then the fit path. Include the complete rim in overall length, width and height. Record the flat inner platform independently for bedding; the channel, exit opening and retaining stop are separate compatibility checks. Schematic only, not a particular tray's shape.

Record all three outside dimensions, the clear rail channel, the exit path and the intended stop. If a listing does not define its measurement points, resolve the exact replacement part rather than assuming the numbers describe what your crate needs. Never infer a bed's usable footprint from the tray's outside rectangle.

Your replacement-pan match worksheet

Use the old pan and the crate's exact identity together. A label such as 36-inch describes a family of sizes, not a shared pan standard. If the pan is missing, the maker's model-specific replacement part is the starting point; an approximate internal floor measurement is not an equivalent substitute.

Plastic versus metal

Plastic is lighter and often quieter against a wire base. A moulded lip can contain small spills, but a cracked corner or chewed edge defeats that benefit. Metal resists some damage and can be easier to scrape clean, yet its coating, welds and rim need regular inspection for sharp points or corrosion.

Neither material fixes a crate that is too small, poorly assembled or causing the dog distress. If the tray was broken during an escape attempt, read what to do when a dog escapes its crate before replacing the pan.

Three replacement routes

MidWest 36-inch plastic pan

The selected polypropylene pan lists 35 × 22 × 1 inches. Its compatibility notes name 36-inch iCrate and New World frames, but distinguish LifeStages versions by the bent or curved slide-bolt latch. Use the exact model notes rather than assuming every 36-inch MidWest frame is the same.

Ellie-Bo 36-inch metal tray

Ellie-Bo publishes 87.5 × 60 × 2cm for the selected galvanised tray. Its width differs from the MidWest examples, which is precisely why the shared 36-inch label is unreliable. Check that the lip clears the access opening and that the tray rests evenly on the correct supports.

MidWest 36-inch metal pan

The selected 36-inch metal pan lists 34.77 × 21.86 × 0.99 inches. The same listing also contains a contradictory 48-inch statement. Its title and dimension line do not resolve that conflict: confirm the exact replacement part and supported crate model before ordering. Inspect the powder coating and seam when it arrives.

Check the fit before adding bedding

Slide the empty pan in and out several times. It should move without bending, sit level and remain behind its stop. Press lightly at corners to find rocking. Check the underside for sharp edges that could mark the floor. Then add bedding and water, confirming that the dog still has the usable internal space needed to sit, turn and lie outstretched. Our bedding and bowl allowance examples separate height above the bed from uncovered floor.

For routine care after installing the replacement, follow how to clean a dog crate. Replace a damaged pan promptly; tape and loose liners are poor substitutes for an intact tray.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Are dog crate trays universal?

No. Nominal crate lengths can conceal different internal rails, tray lips and exit openings. Match model numbers and measure the original pan before buying.

How do I measure a replacement crate tray?

Measure the old tray's outside length, width and lip height, plus the clear channel and opening through which it slides. Photograph the crate label and latch design for compatibility checks.

Is a metal tray better than plastic?

Metal can resist some chewing and scraping, while plastic is often lighter and quieter. Either needs smooth edges, a secure fit and prompt cleaning; damaged trays should be replaced.

Can I use a larger tray and trim it?

Avoid cutting a tray unless the manufacturer specifically designs it for trimming. Altering the edge can remove containment, create sharp points and weaken the pan.

Why does my replacement tray rattle or slide out?

It may be the wrong size or missing a retaining stop. Check the exact model instructions and the condition of the rails; do not wedge the tray with loose materials the dog can reach.

Does an exact inch-to-centimetre conversion prove the tray will fit?

No. Multiplying inches by 2.54 converts the listed number; it does not improve the source's measurement accuracy or account for rim shape, taper, rails and the exit opening. Confirm the exact replacement part as well as dimensions.
