Our recommendations

Soft crates to compare

Mesh, door position and cleaning matter, but fit and behaviour come first. A light fabric structure is not a substitute for secure containment.

Best four-door soft crate
Amazon Basics medium four-door soft-sided dog crate

Amazon Basics four-door soft crate, medium

Best for: Flexible access in a lightweight indoor or destination setup

  • Folds for storage

Keep in mind

  • Unsuitable for puppies or persistent chewers
  • Less secure than a rigid crate

Keep in mind

  • Fabric is harder to deep-clean than a tray
  • Not for puppies or chewers

Keep in mind

  • Weight guidance is not a sizing method
  • Fabric can be damaged by chewing

When a soft crate makes sense

Soft dog crates are lighter and easier to store than most rigid crates. They can create a familiar rest space at a holiday cottage, family visit, show or training venue. That convenience depends on the dog already being able to relax around fabric and mesh.

They are not secure containment for a determined dog. PDSA specifically notes that fabric crates are less durable, harder to clean and unsuitable for puppies and dogs that chew. If your dog scratches doors, bites mesh, pushes boundaries or becomes distressed when enclosed, choose a different management plan.

How to compare soft crates

Confirm the selected variant

Marketplace listings often combine several sizes. Check that the dimensions, image and colour shown at checkout belong to the exact variant selected. Measure the dog's natural length, sitting height and sleeping posture, then compare with usable internal space rather than a weight or breed label.

Look at every ventilation panel

Mesh should allow airflow and visibility without loose threads, tears or areas the dog can reach and chew. Covers, blankets and luggage must not block ventilation. Keep the crate out of direct sun and away from radiators.

Match entries to the room

Multiple doors make a soft crate easier to position, but each zip needs to close fully and remain clear of bedding. A top opening may help arrange the interior; it is not a safe way to lift a dog in the crate.

Plan cleaning before the first accident

Check whether the pad cover is removable, how the base handles moisture and what the care label permits. Hair collects around seams and zips. Clean spills promptly and allow the frame, cover and cushion to dry completely before folding.

The soft crates in detail

Amazon Basics medium: four-door flexibility

The medium Amazon Basics model publishes a 76 × 54 × 54cm size and has four doors, mesh panels, a shoulder strap, removable fleece pad and water-resistant base. Four openings make room placement flexible, provided unused zips remain securely closed.

Amazon Basics large: simple 91cm destination crate

At 91 × 61 × 61cm, the large model uses two doors, mesh on all sides and a polyester cover over a PVC frame. It folds flat but still needs a dry storage place where mesh and zips will not be crushed.

CADOCA medium: useful accessories, but measure independently

CADOCA includes carry handles and a bowl. The listing promotes a weight limit for the medium variant, but weight cannot tell you whether a dog can sit, turn and stretch. Confirm the selected size directly on the listing and use the dog's measurements.

VOUNOT XL: three entries and a plush mat

VOUNOT combines three entries, mesh windows, storage and a removable plush mat. The selected XL dimensions were not clear enough to rely on during our listing check, so confirm them at the point of purchase. The thick mat also reduces usable height.

Introduce the crate while you are present

Set it up completely and check the frame before the dog approaches. Secure an entrance open, scatter treats near and inside, and let the dog investigate. Practise resting with you close by before any brief door closure. Stay within reach during early sessions so fabric-pawing or zip-chewing never becomes established.

Panting, cowering, repeated scratching, biting, drooling or frantic movement are signs to end the session and reassess. A wire crate or pen may be more appropriate, but distress still needs a slower training plan and possibly advice from a vet or qualified behaviour professional.

Portable does not mean crash-tested

Soft crates are frequently marketed for travel. That can mean easy to carry to a destination, not that the structure protects occupants during a collision. For vehicle journeys, follow Highway Code Rule 57 and choose a purpose-designed restraint compatible with the exact vehicle and dog.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Are soft dog crates safe for puppies?

PDSA says fabric crates are unsuitable for puppies and dogs that chew. Puppies can damage mesh or fabric and may need a more robust, easy-clean setup while they learn to settle.

Can a dog be left alone in a soft crate?

Only a calm dog that has been introduced gradually should use one, and close observation is essential at first. A soft crate should never be used for a dog that paws, chews, panics or attempts to force an exit.

Are soft crates suitable for car travel?

Portable or travel wording does not demonstrate collision protection. Use a restraint designed and documented for vehicle use, fitted to the dog and car according to the manufacturer's instructions.

How do I clean a fabric dog crate?

Follow the care label, remove washable pads, vacuum hair from seams and mesh, spot-clean the shell and let every part dry fully before folding. Do not use damaged fabric, zips or mesh.

Do soft crates get hot?

They can retain heat if mesh is covered or airflow is poor. Keep all ventilation panels clear, avoid direct sun and radiators, provide water and monitor the dog's comfort.
