Dog crate care guide
How to clean a dog crate
A practical dog crate cleaning routine for wire and plastic crates, including bedding, water bowls, accidents, drying and damage checks.

Deal with accidents promptly; do not leave damp bedding against the tray.
Wash and refill the water bowl every day, including the mounting bracket when dirty.
Never mix cleaning chemicals or return the dog before surfaces are safe and dry.
Before you start
Set the dog up in another safe, familiar place with water. Open the crate, remove toys, bowl, bedding and any divider that the instructions allow you to detach. If there has been an accident, remove soiled material promptly and protect the household floor while you carry the tray out.
Check the maker's instructions for the crate and every soft item. Wire coatings, plastic pans, foam fillings and fabric covers need different care. Use a pet-appropriate cleaner only as its label directs, including any required dilution, contact time and rinsing. Never combine cleaners or sprays.
Clean the tray and frame
Slide the tray out without scraping liquid across the floor. Remove loose hair and debris first. Wash the pan with warm water and a compatible mild cleaner, paying attention to the lip and corners. Rinse when required, then dry both sides. Inspect underneath the crate for moisture that may have passed around the tray.
Wipe wire bars, door hinges, latches and the area where a divider rests. Check welds and coating for rust or sharp points; a clean crate can still be unsafe if the frame is damaged. On a plastic crate, open or separate only the parts the maker permits, then clean seams and vents without blocking them with residue.
If the pan is cracked or no longer sits level, an exact replacement can restore easy cleaning. The MidWest plastic pan is model-specific; compare the documented tray dimensions and match worksheet before ordering by a 36-inch label. Outside pan measurements do not establish its flat inner platform or exit clearance.
Wash bedding for its construction
Shake or vacuum hair, then follow the bed label. A whole-wash pad must fit the machine and dry through to its centre. A removable cover can come off more easily, but its foam or liner still needs checking after any spill. Do not return damp bedding to the tray.
Our washable crate bed guide explains the difference between whole-bed and cover-only cleaning. A waterproof mat can make accidents easier to manage, but liquid may still run beneath its edge.
Wash the bowl and mount
Empty, wash and refill the water bowl daily. If it clips to the bars, remove the bowl and clean the bracket or contact points when dirty. Soap film and trapped residue can remain where the metal meets the wire. The MidWest Snap’y Fit has a removable stainless insert that simplifies this daily task; check that it locks securely again after cleaning.
Reassemble and check
Wait until the tray, bedding, frame and room floor are dry. Slide the pan in behind its retaining stop, refit the bowl at a comfortable height, and test every door and latch. Bedding should lie flat, water should remain reachable and the dog should still have room to turn, sit and lie naturally.
Repeated soiling is a reason to review toilet access, crate duration and health. Cleaning removes the mess; it does not solve why it happened. Start with how long a dog can stay in a crate and seek veterinary advice for a sudden change.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean a dog crate?
Remove accidents and wet bedding promptly, wash the water bowl daily and clean the tray and contact surfaces whenever soiled. A full clean depends on use, but inspect the crate regularly.
What cleaner should I use on a dog crate?
Use a product suitable for the crate material and safe for use around pets, following its dilution, contact-time and rinse instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals.
Can I wash a dog crate bed in the machine?
Only if the exact care label permits it. Some beds allow a whole-bed wash, others only a removable cover. Dry the filling fully before replacing it.
How do I remove urine smell from a crate?
Clean the affected bed, tray seams, bars and floor beneath rather than masking the smell. A pet-appropriate odour-removing cleaner used as directed can help; persistent accidents warrant a review of toilet access and health.
When should I replace a crate tray?
Replace it if cracks, sharp edges, worn coating or a damaged lip make it hard to clean or unsafe. Match the replacement to the exact crate model and tray measurements.
