Our recommendations
Indoor dog gates worth comparing
These gates cover screw-fixed, pressure-fit, extra-tall and flexible wall-mounted designs. Decide the location first—an option that works between rooms may be wrong at a staircase.

A screw-fixed extending metal gate listed for 62–102cm openings, with one-hand opening and a selectable one- or two-direction swing. There is no pressure-fit floor frame.
What stands out
- Wide 62–102cm range
- No bottom trip bar
- Opening direction can be restricted
Keep in mind
- Requires drilling
- Fixings depend on wall construction
- Not designed specifically around extra-tall dogs

Measure the opening at three heights
Door frames, skirting boards and walls are not always parallel. Measure the clear opening near the floor, halfway up and at the planned top of the gate. Record the narrowest and widest points, skirting projection and whether either surface is hollow, tiled, curved or formed by a banister.
The product's range must accommodate the actual installation method—not merely the central measurement. Extensions change leverage and sometimes require wall cups or different fixings. Use only combinations listed for the exact gate.
Decide between pressure fit and wall mounted
A pressure-fit frame pushes against both sides of an opening. It can avoid drilling and be convenient between rooms, but the base frame remains across the floor and needs sufficient tension. A wall-mounted gate fixes to the structure, usually leaves no full-width threshold and can cover less square openings.
For a stair location, do not reuse ordinary doorway logic. Read our dog gate for stairs guide before selecting a product; the top landing requires particular attention to secure fixings, swing direction and trip hazards. For level rooms, compare pressure-fit limitations, retractable designs and freestanding dividers against the dog's behaviour before choosing the easiest installation.
Match the gate to the dog
Measure standing shoulder and head height, then observe jumping, climbing, squeezing and pawing. Check bar spacing against the smallest part of the dog's body, not just the chest. A small pet flap can defeat the whole boundary if the restricted dog can fit through it.
Remove chairs, consoles and baskets that provide take-off height. If the dog becomes distressed behind a see-through gate, simply increasing the height may not solve the problem.
The gates in detail
Safety 1st Wall Fix: wide, threshold-free access
This screw-fixed metal gate spans a listed 62–102cm and does not use a pressure frame across the floor. That makes it easier to walk through and relevant to suitable stair positions, provided the structure and installation instructions support the location.
It is not an extra-tall pet gate. A jumping dog may need a different boundary even when the width is ideal.
PawHut 104cm: extra height plus a cat flap
PawHut's 104cm gate suits a narrow ground-floor doorway where a dog is restricted but a smaller cat needs passage. The main walk-through door avoids stepping over the whole gate.
Measure the cat flap against the dog's head and shoulders. The pressure frame has a bottom bar, and the 74–80cm supplied width is relatively narrow.
Venture Q-Fix 110cm: tallest option here
At a listed 110cm, the Venture is the tallest in this shortlist. It is designed around pressure fitting, an auto-close door and a 73–80cm base opening.
Use it in a compatible ground-floor doorway, not as a generic answer to every stair. Confirm any extension, wall-cup and closing requirement for the selected configuration.
BabyDan FlexiFit: flexible wall mounting
The FlexiFit covers 67–105.5cm and uses wall-mounted fittings that can accommodate placement inside or outside an opening. It is useful where a conventional straight pressure frame is awkward.
The fixing surface must be structurally sound. Curved banisters and hollow walls may need approved adapters or additional preparation, not improvised spacers.
Test the installation
Complete every fixing and adjustment in the instructions. Check that the gate closes and latches from several starting angles, then apply gentle pressure across the top, latch side and lower corners. Nothing should shift, rack or expose a gap.
Walk through it repeatedly carrying nothing, then with the light objects you routinely move between rooms. A latch that is difficult for you will be left open; a threshold that catches feet needs a different route or gate design.
Teach the boundary
Introduce the closed gate while you remain visible. Reward calm behaviour away from the bars and practise short, ordinary separations. Do not allow repeated jumping, biting or body-slamming; interrupt and change the plan.
Recheck tension, screws, wall cups, hinges and latch action regularly, particularly after the gate has been knocked. If the opening is beside stairs, a front door or another serious hazard, choose the conservative installation and never rely on a movable decorative barrier.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the best type of indoor dog gate?
A securely fitted gate that matches the complete opening, contains the individual dog and does not create an unacceptable trip or escape risk. Wall-mounted gates avoid a pressure-frame floor bar; pressure-fit gates can be convenient in suitable ground-floor doorways.
How tall should an indoor dog gate be?
It must be comfortably above the dog's standing reach and jumping ability without nearby furniture acting as a launch point. Breed and weight do not predict jumping behaviour reliably, so use the individual dog.
Are pressure-fit gates safe for dogs?
They can form useful room boundaries when installed in a compatible opening and checked regularly. Their floor bar is a trip point and they should not be treated as the default choice for the top of stairs.
Can a freestanding gate stop a dog?
Only a calm dog that respects a visual boundary. A freestanding gate can be pushed or pulled and should not be relied on for a stair edge, front door or dog that tests barriers.
Can I use an indoor dog gate for children too?
Only if the exact product is sold and installed as a child safety barrier and you follow its age, location and fitting instructions. A pet-only gate does not become child-safe because it looks similar.
