Our recommendations
Fold-flat crates to compare
Assembled fit comes first. Once that is right, compare door position, handles, divider, tray clearance and the dimensions of the folded frame.

- Rounded corners and removable tray
Keep in mind
- Weight range is only a guide
- Published dimensions appear external
- Protective coating still needs regular inspection

Folding is a storage feature, not a sizing shortcut
A crate that folds flat can be easier to own in a smaller home, but the dog uses it fully assembled. Start with the dog's required internal room, then make sure the assembled frame, open door and removable tray fit the room. Only then should folded depth influence the choice.
The most useful listings publish both states. PawHut gives its assembled size and a 6.5cm folded depth; several others say only that the frame folds flat. If storage is critical, confirm all folded dimensions and whether the tray and divider remain attached.
Assembled, folded dimensions and item weight
The table compares the exact selected variants, with dimensions ordered length × width × height. The mass is the source's Item Weight field: it is not a dog-weight limit, a shipping weight or a promise that a person can carry it comfortably. “Folds flat” remains a useful feature, but it does not supply numerical shelf dimensions.

| Model / ASIN | Assembled L × W × H | Folded L × W × H | Listed item weight | Storage interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Basics 36 · B09G48LHVX | 91.4 × 58.4 × 63.5cm | Not numerically specified | 10kg | Fold-flat claim does not define shelf fit. |
| MidWest iCrate 36 · B000QFT1R2 | 92.7 × 59.7 × 62.9cm | Not numerically specified | 9.98kg | Do not substitute shipping-box dimensions. |
| PawHut 106 · B01FTGW37C | 106 × 68 × 76cm | 106 × 71 × 6.5cm | 12kg | Flat width grows by 3cm even though listed height falls. |
| Amazon Basics XXL · B09G4ZJM3D | 122 × 76.2 × 82.5cm | Not numerically specified | 19.6kg | Long frame and mass both affect handling. |
| Feandrea PPD48H · B00NEF20J2 | 122 × 74.5 × 80.5cm | Not numerically specified | 15.7kg | Two handles do not reduce item mass or prove easy carrying. |
Compare dimensions first and handling second. A lighter item may still be too long for a stair turn; a thinner one may still be too wide for a cupboard. The listed weights do not break down the mass of tray, divider or other components, so avoid adding them again unless you have established that they are excluded. A cover or separate bag adds to the real bundle you carry.
Folding can reduce height without reducing footprint
For the selected PawHut, 106 × 68 × 76cm assembled becomes 106 × 71 × 6.5cm folded. Using the source's L and W axes, the calculated flat rectangles are 0.7208m² and 0.7526m². That is 0.0318m² more, or about 4.4% more flat footprint, despite a substantial reduction in listed height.
The formula is length × width ÷ 10,000, with inputs in centimetres. These are outside-envelope calculations, not usable interior areas. The 3cm increase in folded width is easy to overlook when a listing emphasises a thin 6.5cm bundle.
A flat storage position therefore needs to accommodate 106 × 71cm before allowing for any unlisted projections and retrieval space. This does not establish that the frame can safely stand on its edge, hang from a wall or support objects placed on top. Use only a storage arrangement supported by the maker, and keep a folded frame stable and inaccessible to the dog.
Your folding-crate storage worksheet
Record the storage opening as well as the space behind it. If a shelf is involved, check its allowable load and support against the complete bundle; the crate's item weight does not establish the shelf's capacity. Do not fill absent folded dimensions with the assembled length and width or with the shipping carton.

| Record | Your crate / storage | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Selected variant | Model / size / folded L × W × H: ____ | Dimensions of folded item, not retail carton. |
| Bundle and handling | Listed item mass: ____; loose tray / divider / cover: ____ | What is included in the stated dimensions and mass; transport empty. |
| Storage space | Clear opening / shelf / depth / allowable shelf load: ____ | Allow for protruding handles and retrieval; no universal margin assumed. |
| Route | Narrowest opening / turning space / stairs: ____ | Destination fit alone does not establish a manageable carrying route. |
Four measurements beyond the dog
The assembled footprint
Mark the full external length and width on the floor. Large 122cm crates can dominate a room and narrow a route even when the dog has enough space inside. Keep the position out of direct sun and draughts, but do not isolate the dog from normal household life.
The door swing
Draw the arc of each door with tape. A second door is valuable only if it opens into clear space. Check nearby cupboards, radiators, skirting boards and furniture legs.
The tray-removal route
Removable trays usually slide out at one end. Leave enough clearance to remove one without dragging the crate or dismantling nearby furniture. Clean and dry the tray before replacing it, and inspect edges for damage.
The storage route
Measure doorways, stairs, the car boot opening and the cupboard itself. A 122cm folded crate may be thin but remains more than a metre long. Plan where the tray, divider and cover will go so parts are not lost or bent.
The folding crates in detail
Amazon Basics 36-inch: uncomplicated two-door storage
This 91.4 × 58.4 × 63.5cm model combines two doors, a divider, handle and plastic tray in a fold-flat frame. It is a practical common size, but the published dimensions appear to be external. Compare the dog's requirements with the actual interior.
MidWest iCrate 36-inch: similar footprint, useful divider
MidWest lists 92.7 × 59.7 × 62.9cm and includes a divider. That makes it useful for planned puppy growth. The few centimetres separating it from another 36-inch crate can still affect both headroom and whether the frame clears a piece of furniture.
PawHut 106cm: the clearest storage specification
The PawHut publishes a 106 × 71 × 6.5cm folded size as well as a 106 × 68 × 76cm assembled size. That makes cupboard planning more reliable. It has two doors and a tray but no listed divider.
Amazon Basics XXL: divider included at 122cm
The 122 × 76.2 × 82.5cm XXL frame is a substantial object even when folded. Its double-door layout and divider broaden placement and puppy-growth options, but moving it will still require a clear route and confident handling.
Feandrea PPD48H: two handles for a large folded frame
Feandrea's 122 × 74.5 × 80.5cm crate includes two handles as well as two doors, double locks and a tray. Handles help control an empty folded frame; they do not make it appropriate to move with a dog inside.
Fold and unfold it safely
Remove the dog, water, bedding and toys first. Work on a clear floor and follow the model's instructions rather than forcing panels. Keep fingers away from hinges and hooks, and confirm every retaining point is fully engaged after opening. Replace a bent or damaged part instead of improvising a repair.
If the crate is assembled in different places, repeat the location check each time: airflow, direct sun, draughts, door access, tray clearance and a stable level base. A familiar blanket can make a destination feel more recognisable, provided it does not reduce essential space or present a chewing risk.
For a fuller material comparison, see metal versus plastic versus fabric crates. If portability matters more than secure containment and the dog is calm around fabric, compare soft crates.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do folding dog crates assemble without tools?
Many wire models unfold and lock into shape without tools, but follow the manufacturer's instructions every time. Check that hooks, panels and base tray are correctly seated before the dog enters.
How much storage space does a folded crate need?
Folded depth is only one dimension. Measure the folded length and height, handles, tray and any loose divider, then check the full route to the storage place. Large crates remain long and awkward even when flat.
Can I carry a folding crate with the dog inside?
No. Folding household crates should be empty before they are moved. Transfer the dog safely, remove bowls and loose bedding, secure the folded frame and use the provided handles according to the instructions.
Are folding crates suitable for daily use?
Yes, if the model is correctly sized, fully locked open, kept in good condition and introduced positively. Repeated folding adds wear, so inspect hinges, hooks, latches and coatings each time.
Is a fold-flat crate a travel crate?
Fold-flat describes storage, not crash performance. A household folding crate may be convenient at a destination but should not be treated as a collision-tested car restraint unless the manufacturer documents that purpose.
Is a folded crate's footprint always smaller?
No. The listed PawHut 106cm model changes from 106 × 68cm assembled to 106 × 71cm folded flat. Its vertical height falls to 6.5cm, but the calculated flat rectangle is about 4.4% larger. Check every axis, not just folded thickness.
