Retractable dog gate buying guide
Best retractable dog gates
Compare retractable dog gates for UK homes by mesh or rigid-panel design, mounted width, lower gaps, latching and dog behaviour.

Our recommendations
Retractable designs to compare
The folding rigid option and two roll-up mesh options make the safety trade-offs clearer than a generic “space-saving gate” label.
BabyDan Guard Me Wide retractable gate
Best for: A narrower doorway where a threshold-free gate can fold aside
A screw-mounted rigid-panel gate that folds back automatically and is listed for openings up to 113.5cm, depending on inside or outside mounting.
What stands out
- No floor threshold
- Rigid folding panels
- Documented mounting ranges
Keep in mind
- Requires drilling
- 113.5cm applies only to suitable fit
- Not a soft mesh gate
- Up to 113.5cm in suitable inside fit
- Wall mounted
- Auto-folding rigid panels
Comfen 150cm retractable mesh gate
Best for: A level doorway where a calm small or medium dog respects a mesh boundary
A wall-mounted black mesh gate listed to extend to 150cm wide and 86cm high, rolling into a compact cassette when open.
What stands out
- 150cm listed span
- Rolls away
- No floor frame
Keep in mind
- Soft mesh can deform
- Wall fixings required
- Not for forceful dogs
- Up to 150cm wide
- 86cm high
- Retractable mesh
Hollyhome 180cm retractable mesh gate
Best for: A wider level-room opening where a soft barrier is appropriate
A grey retractable mesh gate listed to extend to 180cm wide and stand 86cm high, with two sets of mounting hardware.
What stands out
- 180cm listed span
- Roll-up storage
- Two mounting-hardware sets
Keep in mind
- Mesh is not rigid
- More width can mean more deflection
- Needs secure hardware
- Up to 180cm wide
- 86cm high
- Retractable mesh

Understand what disappears when the gate opens
A retractable gate saves swing space, but there are two construction types in this selection. A mesh screen winds into a narrow housing; a rigid accordion-style gate folds into linked panels. When open, both clear more of the route than a hinged walk-through frame. When closed, they behave differently if a dog leans, paws, chews or crawls under them.
Measure the opening at the exact height of the top and bottom brackets. Skirting may push one fixing position forward, leaving the mesh or rigid panel misaligned. Also check the cassette's or folded stack's parked position: it must not collide with a door, radiator or furniture.
The retractable options in detail
BabyDan Guard Me Wide: rigid panels that fold away
The Guard Me Wide is screw mounted and has no full-width pressure frame across the floor. It folds back automatically when opened. BabyDan lists different width ranges for inside-frame and outside-frame installation; the upper 113.5cm figure does not apply to every mounting position.
BabyDan also specifies a spacer where skirting projects from the wall. Use only a solution compatible with its instructions and a sound fixing surface. Our skirting-board gate guide explains how to measure that projection before ordering.
Comfen 150cm: a compact mesh cassette
The selected Comfen gate is listed at 86cm high and up to 150cm wide. The mesh rolls away when not needed and leaves no pressure-frame bar on the floor. That makes it attractive in a level hallway, but its soft lower edge needs particular attention for a small dog.
Check that the dog cannot slide a nose under the mesh, claw at the lower edge or pull the catch sideways. Fix both ends as directed and keep the screen taut. Do not stretch it beyond its listed range to reach a distant wall.
Hollyhome 180cm: longer mesh reach
Hollyhome's grey screen extends to a listed 180cm and comes with two sets of mounting hardware. The length may cover an opening that a 150cm screen cannot, but a longer soft run may be easier for a forceful dog to displace. Match it to a calm dog and a secure level-room position.
Treat retailer wording about stairs or outdoor use as a prompt to inspect the actual instructions, not proof that every stair edge or exposed patio is appropriate. A soft barrier across a long span is not the same as a fixed metal gate.
Test the real installation, not only the latch
After mounting, close the gate repeatedly. Check the upper and lower gaps, tension, catch engagement and whether the housing shifts when you operate it. Look from the dog's side at paw-accessible mesh edges and at any space beside the wall. Keep cords, handles or hooks out of reach.
If the dog rushes or bites the barrier, stop using it as a containment answer and reassess the room setup. For a dog needing a rigid broad boundary, compare wide modular gates. For stairs, start with dog gates for stairs and use only an exact model approved for the position.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Are retractable mesh gates safe for dogs?
They can manage a calm dog in a suitable level opening, but mesh can deflect, be chewed or leave a gap below. Observe the individual dog's behaviour and follow the exact fixing and location instructions.
Can a retractable dog gate be used at the top of stairs?
Only if the exact model and configuration are approved by its manufacturer for that position and can be fixed to suitable structure. Do not infer suitability from a product title; our stair guide covers the additional fall-edge checks.
Do retractable gates leave a floor bar?
These styles generally avoid a full pressure-frame threshold, but the mounting hardware and bottom clearance vary. Check the precise model and whether a low gap lets your dog squeeze under.
Is 180cm mesh stronger than 150cm mesh?
Width alone says nothing about strength. A longer extended mesh span can move more under force, so consider the dog's size, behaviour, mounting quality and the maker's instructions.
What is the difference between mesh and Guard Me?
Mesh winds into a cassette. Guard Me folds a series of rigid panels to one side. Their opening ranges, lower edges and fitting constraints differ.
