Travel temperature safety
Ventilation and temperature around a car crate
Keep airflow clear around a dog car crate, plan heat-safe journeys and recognise why shade or open windows cannot make a parked car safe.

Check airflow with the tailgate closed and normal luggage loaded, not only in an empty parked boot.
Do not cover a car crate or push vents against trim to make it fit.
If the dog shows heat distress, stop safely and seek veterinary help promptly.
A crate is not a climate-control system
A car crate can restrain and contain a dog, but its vents only work when air can circulate around them. A boot packed with cases can seal off an entire side. A sunlit rear window can heat the crate even when the front seats feel comfortable. Look at the arrangement with the hatch closed and all normal luggage loaded.
RSPCA advice is clear that dogs should not be left alone in warm cars. Shade, a cracked window and a bowl of water do not remove the danger. If an errand would leave the dog in the car, change the plan and arrange care outside the vehicle.
Set up airflow before departure
Check the crate maker's required clearances and keep every designed vent, door grid and rear escape route open. Do not pack a suitcase, coat or dog blanket against a vent. Secure luggage independently so a sudden stop cannot throw it across an opening. A fitted vehicle guard or privacy cover may alter air movement; reassess the complete setup after any change.
Thule's Allax provides ventilated panels and explicit installation instructions. Its documented design is useful only when fitted as required and kept clear of obstruction. The Ferplast Atlas Car Scenic has a moulded shell and grid openings, but its shape and vent location require their own clearance check. Neither product turns a parked car into a safe waiting room.
Plan the journey around the dog
Travel in a cooler part of the day when possible, pre-cool the vehicle, carry fresh water and plan stops. A small dog, older dog, short-nosed breed or a dog with heart or breathing difficulties may be less tolerant of heat; ask a vet about individual risk. Stop safely if the dog pants unusually, drools heavily, becomes weak or seems confused. Move them to a cooler place and seek veterinary help promptly.
For a route with ferries, queues or traffic, plan for delays. Do not count on the engine and air-conditioning running continuously. Check the dog's position and the boot temperature at stops without leaving the dog inside while you go elsewhere.
Recheck after each packing change
A crate that ventilated well on a short empty-car journey may not do so with holiday luggage. Revisit the vent clearances, door access and attachment each time the load changes. Our installation checklist covers these checks; the boot-fit guide helps leave enough room around the unit from the outset.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave a dog in a car crate with the windows open?
No. Open windows or shade do not reliably prevent a parked vehicle heating rapidly. Do not leave a dog unattended in a warm car.
Does air-conditioning reach the car boot?
Airflow varies by vehicle, vents, load and partition. Check the dog and the actual boot environment rather than assuming the cabin setting reaches the crate.
Is a crate cover suitable in a car?
Only if the exact maker permits it and airflow remains adequate. Do not cover designed vents or add a cloth that can fall across an opening.
How often should I stop for water?
Plan regular stops based on the dog, weather and journey; offer water and reassess comfort. Do not use a fixed interval as a guarantee against heat risk.
What signs suggest a dog is overheating?
Heavy or unusual panting, drooling, weakness, confusion or collapse are urgent warning signs. Stop safely, move the dog to a cooler place and contact a vet promptly.
