Why a sloped back can help

Many estate and hatchback boots lose depth as the tailgate rises. A rectangular crate may fit on the floor yet prevent the hatch from closing. A sloping rear panel can follow that curve, but it is not a shortcut around measuring: the steepest part may sit exactly where your dog's shoulders or head need room.

Measure the dog first, then the hatch opening, boot floor and depth at several heights. Our car-boot measuring guide gives a repeatable method. Record the room left for any manufacturer-specified rear clearance and for the front door to open.

How the options differ

Thule Allax: documented design and adjustable depth

The Allax range has an adjustable-depth construction, a rear escape hatch and manufacturer instructions for tension-band attachment. Thule publishes front, rear and simulated roll-over testing and identifies TÜV SÜD certification. Its specified rear crumple-zone allowance is part of the installation, not spare boot space to reclaim. Verify the selected small variant in Thule's vehicle fit tool and check the dog's usable room.

CADOCA medium: a compact metal footprint

This angled aluminium-frame model is listed at 70 × 54 × 51cm, which may suit a narrower floor. Measure the door opening and internal sloping roof separately; the published outside dimensions cannot establish dog fit. The listing does not provide an exact-model collision report, so do not treat its material or sloped shape as crash evidence.

Cozy Pet ACDC12: a wider two-door option

The ACDC12 is listed around 89–90 × 69 × 60cm and has two doors with a removable divider. The product title and a listing bullet differ by 1cm on width, so check the assembled size for a tight boot. It suits a different problem: a broad boot and planned individual access. It is not automatically suitable for two dogs; each needs enough space, and a divider does not establish collision performance. Check the fasteners and the manufacturer's attachment guidance.

Fit the whole journey, not just the parked car

Put a cardboard outline of the candidate crate through the hatch. A box that fits the floor can still catch on the loading lip, rear-window rake or tailgate latch. Leave ventilation openings unobstructed by bags, seatbacks or trim. If the rear hatch is the only access, ask how you would reach the dog if the tailgate jammed.

Finally, secure the crate exactly as its instructions require; wedging it against trim is not an installation method. Our car crate installation checklist and crash-evidence explainer help separate those checks.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a sloping dog crate safer than a square crate?

Shape alone says nothing about crash performance. The right profile can improve boot fit, but protection depends on exact-product evidence, compatible installation and enough room for the dog.

How do I measure the slope of my car boot?

Measure usable depth at floor and at the proposed crate roof height, then check the narrowest hatch opening and close the tailgate slowly around a cardboard outline.

Can the crate touch the tailgate glass?

Follow the maker's required clearances. A crate pressed against glass or trim can prevent the hatch closing properly and may remove a designed crumple zone.

Do sloped crates have less room for dogs?

They can. A generous external floor length may hide reduced headroom or length at shoulder height, so check usable internal dimensions and the dog's natural postures.

Can I use a sloping crate without strapping it down?

Do not assume a close fit is an anchor. Follow the exact product's approved attachment method and check the vehicle has suitable cargo points.
