Practical dog-space guides

Measurement, placement, cleaning and welfare-aware setup advice for equipment used at home and on the move.

Start with the space you are trying to create. Our dog crate guides cover fit and setup; carriers and travel separates home, vehicle and airline jobs; pens and gates covers flexible boundaries; and beds and home spaces focuses on comfort, cleaning and room layout.

We use individual measurements rather than treating a breed name as a size. Where welfare, vehicle restraint or airline rules matter, the current primary guidance takes priority over a retailer’s marketing description.

Fitting a dog gate

Start by measuring the opening at the gate's actual fixing points. If the wall is uneven or the doorway is unusually broad, see awkward openings and wide gate options. Projecting trim needs its own skirting-board check; finish with the installation checklist.

Planning a new puppy space

Start with a first-week home layout, then choose a crate-and-playpen setup that leaves room for water and movement. For awkward rooms, see our flat layout and open-plan zones. Before widening access, check cables around the pen and plan a supervised transition into the room.
